My Perfect Summer Breakfast

Good morning everyone! I hope you all are having a wonderful summer so far. I wanted to share with you today my idea of the perfect summer breakfast.  After moving into my new apartment, I quickly realized that my new back porch was the perfect place to start my day. So here is my version of the perfect start to your summer days.

Viola! Summer morning bliss

This breakfast is quick and easy to make, and it’s super healthy. First up, I have some banana and walnut oatmeal. I recommend Quaker Heart Medleys Multigrain Oatmeal. They have several tasty flavors, and all include healthy whole grains, vitamins, and minerals.

Quaker Oats Heart Medley Banana Walnut Oatmeal...mmm!

Next I have some fresh fruit! Strawberries and blueberries to be exact. Fresh fruit is an important part of any breakfast because they are packed with essential vitamins and minerals your body needs to start your day off right. Also, they contain antioxidants that support healthy skin, healthy organs, and some can even fight cancer! Check out this website to learn more about antioxidants and where they can be found.

Fresh strawberries and blueberries. My favorites!

And finally I have a tall glass of apple juice. It’s a sweet way to get a good source of vitamins, like vitamin C. Plus it’s just so delicious!

Simply Apple apple juice 🙂

There you have it! My perfect summer breakfast out on my back porch. I feel like I’m on the beach! Share with me your perfect summer breakfast by leaving a comment below!

Healthy Memorial Day Tradition

Happy Memorial Day Weekend everyone! I hope you all have festive plans for this patriotic holiday, and if you do, they probably involve a cookout or two. Here are my tips for making your Memorial Day cookout a healthy, fun success!

  1. Appetizers – Instead of the usual potato chips and dip, opt for a healthier tortilla chips and salsa. Tortilla chips have less fat and calories than potato chips, and they don’t leave that greasy residue on your fingers like potato chips do. And what’s not to love about salsa? It’s made of loads of fruits and veggies, it’s typically low-calorie, and it comes in all sorts of fun, tasty, and spicy flavors and combinations. Pick up some pre-made salsa at the grocery store or follow these recipes and make your own!
  2. Sides – Try centering your sides around a vegetable or a fruit, like offering grilled asparagus and baked potatoes. Also, add a colorful fruit salad with apples, bananas, oranges, and grapes. Try to steer clear of coleslaws that are loaded up with unhealthy amounts of mayonnaise.
  3. The Main Event – One of my favorite cookout items is chicken skewers, or chicken kabobs. Chicken is leaner than red meat, and you can add flavors to it by marinating it before cooking. Also, you can load up the skewers with some delicious zucchini, yellow squash, and onions to add flavor, nutrition, and color to your delicious dish. Check out these yummy chicken kabob recipes and get creative!

And there you have it. Just a few suggestions on how to make your holiday cookout a little healthier for everyone. If you’re going to a friend’s cookout, feel free to bring any of these dishes to add to the buffet. Your friends will appreciate your contribution, and you can make sure that there are some healthier options available. Have a happy Memorial Day!

Health Food Challenge!

That’s right guys. I’m challenging you to treat your bodies right until the end of this semester. With all the stress that the end of the semester can bring, it can be easy to give into junk food temptations. They get to me, too. But it is important to treat your body right and provide it with the proper nutrients now more than ever. Staying healthy and active will help relieve stress, making it easier  to get through all the those last minute papers and projects, and helping you get ready for finals.

So this is my challenge: Replace one junk food item each meal with a healthy food item. For example, instead of burgers and fries, get a burger with some baked chips. Or for dinner, instead of macaroni and cheese with potato chips, swap in some carrots for chips.

Little changes like that will make all the difference, and they’ll get you on the right track to feeling physically ready to take on the end of the semester. Let me know what you think, how you’re doing, and if you think this challenge has benefited you by leaving a comment.

Water, Water Everywhere!

Remember being told you should drink up to 8 glasses of water a day? Well, whoever told you that is a very smart person, because they were right. Drinking water is the perfect way to keep your body is great shape.

There are a lot of benefits to drinking water. They include:

  1. Healthier and younger looking skin
  2. Better mood
  3. Better digestion
  4. Feeling more attentive and awake
  5. And just overall feeling better

Those aren’t the only things water does for you. It helps hydrate your muscles, bones, and organs, allows them all to function smoothly, and helps flush out toxins and waste. Find out more about the benefits of drinking water, and start enjoying one of natures best features.

Want to know the best thing about water? It’s the cheapest drink you can buy. Most restaurants offer it for free, and you can always bring your own water bottle to school or to work and fill it up in a water fountain. Shake things up by adding a powder mix to  it and give it a little flavor if you want. But start drinking more water, and start feeling the benefits!

Tough Love

Okay guys, it’s time for some tough love. It is my goal to provide you with tips and information about staying healthy on a budget in college, but I keep hearing that it’s “impossible to eat healthy in college.” Well, that’s nothing more than an excuse.

I understand that being in college presents money issues. Trust me, I suffer from being broke just as much as anybody. But think about the things you spend money on every day. How many of those things are actually necessary? Did you need to buy that new dress? How badly did you  need that video game? Was that fast food run really important?

Yes, healthy food can be expensive. But if you cut back on throwing your money away on fast food, junk food, sodas, and other unnecessary items, you’ll find that you can splurge for healthier foods. And all that purging will not only help you become healthier, but it will help your mind and emotions as well. There’s nothing like “trimming the fat” and getting rid of things you don’t need.

The bottom lines is this: It’s your body, and you only get one. Treat it like a temple. Why do we spend more money on the top-of-the-line technology than we do on “top-of-the-line” food? It just doesn’t make any sense.

Think about it: You Are What You Eat.
